Meet Nino Ferrer, the French singer who wished he was black

Nino Ferrer, the Don Quixote and the Corto Maltese of French show business, was an Italian-French singer, author and songwriter.

His first success came in 1965 with the song "Mirza". In 1966, he recorded "Je voudrais être Noir", he paid tribute to several african-american singers he admires such as Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Ray Charles. He sang about his regret of having the kind of voice it takes to sing rhythm, blues and soul.
Hey hey hey, Monsieur Wilson Picket
Hey hey hey, toi Monsieur James Brown
Monsieur King, Monsieur Charles, Monsieur Brown

I read some where that he got into a lot of trouble for singing this song and that he was banished from France's number one tv channel which put an end to his career. I am not sure it did because he made several other songs after "Je voudrais être Noir". Nino wrote over 200 songs they say but had only a few hits, maybe his wanting to be black had something to do with him not making several hits because they refused to play his songs on air, who knows !

On the 13th of august 1998, a couple of months after his mother died and two days before his 64th birthday, Nino took his hunting gun and walked to a field of wheat, recently cut, near the neighbouring village of Saint-Cyprien. There, he layed down in a grove nearby and shot himself in the chest.

His wife Kinou, with whom he had two sons, had already alerted the gendarmerie after finding a farewell letter in the house. Next day, there were front-page headlines in most French and Italian newspapers, such as "Adieu Nino!", "Nino Ferrer Hung Up His Telephone", "Our Nino Has Left for the South."

Nino was not the only French singer who admires the voice of black singers, Claude Nougaro also showed his admiration in his song titled Armstrong, in honour of Louis Armstrong.
Armstrong, je ne suis pas noir,
Je suis blanc de peau
Quand on veut chanter l'espoir,
Quel manque de pot
Armstrong is a French adaptation of the gospel song Go Down Moses.

Paroles de Je Voudrais être Noir

Hey hey hey, Monsieur Wilson Picket
Hey hey hey, toi Monsieur James Brown
Monsieur King, Monsieur Charles, Monsieur Brown

Hey hey hey, dis-moi Monsieur Faubus

Quand on veut chanter l'espoir,

On voit toutes tes dents
Moi, je broie plutôt du noir,
Du noir en dedans
Chante pour moi, Louis, oh ! oui
Chante, chante, chante, ça tient chaud
J'ai froid, oh ! moi
Qui suis blanc de peau

Armstrong, la vie, quelle histoire !
C'est pas très marrant
Qu'on l'écrive blanc sur noir
Ou bien noir sur blanc,
On voit surtout du rouge, du rouge
Sang, sang, sans trêve ni repos
Qu'on soit, ma foi,
Noir ou blanc de peau

Armstrong, un jour, tôt ou tard,
On n'est que des os...
Est ce que les tiens seront noirs ?
Ce serait rigolo
Allez Louis, alléluia !
Au delà de nos oripeaux,
Noir et Blanc
Sont ressemblants
Comme deux gouttes d'eau
