The best of Jacques Brel

Jacques Brel was a Belgian singer-songwriter who was popular not only in the francophone world but also in the anglophone world. A lot of people still think that he is French. Having sold over 25 million records worldwide, Brel is the third best-selling Belgian recording artist of all time.

Jacques Romain Georges Brel was born into a bourgeois family in Schaarbeek, Brussels, Belgium on 8 April 1929. He left Brussels for Paris in the fall of 1953 where he found fame. He was known for his violent and emotional songs. It is said that by the time he ends his concerts, he is dripping with sweat from head to toe. Brel was also a successful actor, he appeared in ten films and directed two. 

He gave up singing live in 1966 and was in semi-retirement for the last 10 years of his life. He died from lung cancer at the age of 49, in October 1978 at Bobigny, France.

Acoording to Independent.co.uk, is the most popular "dead" singer in the French language. He still sells more than 200,000 albums a year, significantly more than Edith Piaf.

Stromae is often compared with Jacques Brel because oof the way he pours raw human emotion into his songs. Stromae is the Brel of today. The 29 year old singer is presently one of the most successful musician in Belgium and in the French-speaking world.
